Elizabeth Gonzales doesn’t speak English. But, in a society where race and cultural differences play a factor in everything from the race for president to the battle over immigration that dominates the nightly news, her story is an uplifting respite that transcends language, race, cultural background and belief. Her tale, shared with the help of daughter, Marybell Trujillo, is one of hope, love and stalwart determination.

American Family Insurance Group

Madison, Wisconson 53783-0001

Our Mission

Our mission at American Family Insurance Group is to be the most trusted and valued service-driven insurance company.

Our Chief Executives

  • David R. Anderson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
  • Jack C. Salzwedel, President and Chief Operating Officer
Our History

American Family’s history began on Oct. 3, 1927, when insurance salesman Herman Wittwer opened the doors of Farmers Mutual Insurance Company in Madison, Wis. At the time, the company’s only product was auto insurance and its target market was farmers. Wittwer believed farmers presented lower risks than city drivers because they drove less often and not at all in the winter.

Over the years, Farmers Mutual expanded its market and product line to meet the changing needs of its customers. In 1963, Farmers Mutual changed its name to American Family Mutual Insurance Company to reflect its broader customer base.

Today, American Family agents offer auto, homeowners, life, health, commercial and farm/ranch insurance, plus financial services. Still based in Madison, the company operates in 18 states and will consider further expansion in the coming years.

American Family started doing business in Colorado in 1966. We have 334 agents in Colorado. Our company is the third-largest writer of private passenger auto insurance in Colorado, with $276.3 million in written premium in 2006, and the third-largest writer of homeowners insurance, with $148.4 million in written premium in 2006.

Our Community Involvement

American Family has a long tradition of community sponsorships and involvement, contributing to organizations that improve the quality of life for those in need, particularly children. In 2006, the company made charitable contributions of more than $2.3 million and continued its $13 million support for the construction of a new children's hospital in Madison, Wis. American Family, together with employees and agents, also pledged more than $1 million to local United Way chapters.

This strong sense of community extends beyond financial contributions. Our agents and employees volunteer countless hours outside the workplace. They participate in food drives and fund-raising events for diabetes and cancer research. They donate blood to the American Red Cross, coach youth sports teams and play an active role in a variety of school, church and community activities.
